In 1980 a group of individuals determined to find a solution to the transportation needs of area residents, researched ways to establish a transit system that would help people get back and forth  to work. With the help of some very determined area leaders and a representative from the Department of Transportation, Bay Area Rural Transit was born in 1981.

B.A.R.T. runs 2 fixed routes for the partner communities of Red Cliff, Bayfield, Washburn, Ashland, and Odanah. The routes start at 6:45 AM and run until 6:45 PM Monday through Friday except holidays.

The South/East (Route 2) route starts in Red Cliff and proceeds to Ashland through the communities of Bayfield and Washburn with a limited Ashland City loop.  It continues through east Ashland, old Odanah, new Odanah, and ends at the Moccasin Trail Center.

The West/North (Route 1) route starts in Odanah daily and proceeds west to Ashland including an Ashland City loop. It then serves west Ashland and the communities of Washburn and Bayfield before ending in Red Cliff.

The bus routes are designed to serve each of its bus stops every two hours.  The bus may be flagged down at points between the designated bus stops by simply waving your hands to indicate that you want a ride. The bus will only stop at street corners or a safe location along highways.  You must be on the side of the road the bus is traveling.
